I need to switch out some old rusty latches on the wildernest I just purchased, they look to be riveted on......any suggestions on replacement? I have not been able to even find the backs of the rivets just seems to be another layer of fiberglass? Any help would be much appreciated.

Just replaced mine. I drilled out the rivets and through bolted with stainless. Theres an aluminum rail mounted inside the nest that the rivets go through, when you drill them out, the ends will fall into the rail. I found it easiest to do this with the nest open and with the correct size screws. For the latch keeper(the little hook thing the latch grabs), #10/24 x 2" For the bottom holes on the latch, #10/24 x 3/4"(The bottom holes don't go int the rail) For the top holes on the latch, #10/24 x 1 1/2" (Drill through the rail) All screw are backed up with a stainless flat washer, split ring lock washer, and CAP NUT(ACORN NUT). This will prevent the screw end from damaging the nylon tent.

wildernest_adv That instructable came in at the perfect time. I had just ordered two latches that didn't work and then decided to do some more research and stumbled upon your tutorial a couple weeks ago. Got my new ones in the other day from the link in your post and I will be putting them on shortly. Thanks!

These look very good but they don't appear to be exactly like my old ones. The eyelet that rotates on mine to keep the latch from opening doesn't seem to be on the new latch. Yes, the eyelet is there but it does not appear to rotate. The new one appears to require a lock to keep it from opening which means there would be something flopping around while off-road. Am I seeing it wrong?

No you are right Gary. The eyelet on the new ones do not rotate to lock. However, if you use 2 small carabiners it will do the same job as a lock with a lot less weight swinging around while off-road.

Yeah, You're right Gary. My old latches wouldn't close enough to use the rotating loop to latch anyway so I just kept them locked with small combo locks. I will say that the new ones seem a little more substantial than the old ones.

Evan, I must admit, I had to do a Google search on carabiners. My spell check doesn't even recognize it. That looks like a decent way to secure the latches without lot of weight swinging around. My latches still work well but I think I will order a new set as a back up in case mine ever do fail.
Wildernest_ADV, thanks for posting the link on where to buy them. Once I had the name of them I did a quick search to see if I could save a buck or two. I found them on eBay with free shipping and a little less. When I ordered two in black, they gave me discount and I ended up getting the pair for $22.72. That made it worth getting a set to hold as a spare.
