I have a 6' short bed compact truck 'Nest with the sloping back window. I use Strong Arm #4423 gas struts, which you can find usually locally at Auto Zone. They are 17.2" extended length, 11" compressed length and rated for 30 lbs force. These have a 3/8" ball socket on both ends. I think the actual listed application is the rear window on the Ford Bronco II.

I use 28 lb ones on mine - I’ve used stronger ones and I though it was trying to rip the hatch apart hah. Here are the ones I use: Suspa C16-02622 C1602622 17" Gas Prop, Quantity (2), Force is 28 Lbs per prop and Force per set is 56 Lbs, Suspa recommends to replace both struts at www.amazon.com/dp/B0041E9CMS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_Nrkqc2qjsj8YY

I got mine at Pep Boys. When I first replaced them I found they had a lifetime warranty and I have taken advantage of that. They last 5 to 8 years and I take them back for a free exchange when they don't stay up anymore. I don't know how long they are going to keep doing that since I have been doing it since around 1995. The brand is Stabilus Lift-O-Mat and the part number I use now is SG330002. It is not exactly like the original lift strut because they stopped making the exact replacement. Pep Boys let me search through what they had in stock and I found one that has a longer extension (18.1") and still compresses enough (11.5")to close the window without bottoming it. The spec states they are rated at 34 lbs. Other than that, it is an exact replacement. It ended up being a better lift because it pushes the window higher and clears my head better. They also seem to have some way restricting the push up speed. The other ones I used kind of flung open and I had to hold it to keep it from banging open. These, I can just open it to the point where it starts opening itself and I can let go to let it slowly open. Actually, now they are over 5 years old and only open themselves to about parallel to the ground. I can push the window all the way up and it holds there just fine but it won't go there by itself unless it is a hot day.

Strangely, my 'Nest used a totally different (shorter) size from what you all are describing. It had SUSPA C16-04154 lifters, with a compressed length of 9" and an extended length of 14.5". With those, in the open position the rear hatch was basically horizontal (leading to a lot of head impacts) so I was looking for something longer.
After a LOT of searching online, the only replacements I could find that fit and had a significantly longer extended length were at liftsupportsdepot.com, model PM3365N10. These have a compressed length of 9.25" and extended length of 15.87" with 27 lbs of lifting force. Hoping this saves someone else some time.

Yes, I should add that my Wildernest is for a 6' bed on a small truck (Ford Ranger).
