I have recently found and bought a Wildernest for my 87 F-350. It is in great condition, all the structure is perfect. Only problem is a couple holes in the fabric as well as mildew problems. Im thinking I want to just go ahead and replace the entire fabric. First question, what was the original made of? Second, any idea where I could go to have it replaced? Third, any material that would work better than original? I am totally in love with this camper, and look forward to many years of use! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have seen the info on that site, which has some great stuff. More after the exact material used, coating, weight, etc.

The Wildernest tent fabric is 8 oz. 400 Denier Nylon pack cloth sealed with poly urethane coating on the inside. You could probably go to an upholstery shop where they can look up this fabric in their catalogs if they don't already have it in stock. I can't think of any other type fabric that would be superior. The combination of the thick nylon and urethane makes it strong and totally water proof. The only other fabric I would recommend, would be canvas. But it would need to be treated with some kind of water proofing.

I think a 420 Denier Cordura would be an excellent replacement, with a little 1000D thrown in at the pole supports. I was wondering this myself since I just bought my Wildernest. While it's in good enough shape to last a while longer, it will need to be replaced at some point in the future. I think the more difficult part might be finding things like the windows & mosquito netting areas.
As far as WHERE to have it done, that's a tough one. When the time comes, I plan to tackle it myself since I have a sewing machine and am capable of handling a job of this nature. I'd start asking around upholstery shops and awning companies in your area. Take the camper to them so they can get an idea what you're asking for. Ask them who THEY would recommend if they don't feel confident trying to make a new one.
Also there's plenty of room for customization (colors, windows, buckles, curtains, etc). Sadly, it will probably cost as much in material and labor as the thing is worth. Although it's worth much less with a rotten tent...

anybody come up with a place that will remake the tent yet? had a quote of $180 to just replace the ends. (excluding the vents) wonder if any of those fancy independent mountaineering tent makers might consider it...
