Hello, I'm running into some problems with my Wildernest restoration and am looking for some help. I'm in the process of removing the screws from the hinges and putting nut, washer, and bolts on so they are more secure. Problem 1.) some of the screws broke and are lodged into the fibreglass. I've tried drilling through them with drill bits (unsuccessfully), even my cobalt drill set that I just bought broke while trying to drill. Problem 2.) The bottom section of the hinge I was able to put nuts on, but the top section there simply isn't enough room to fit my fingers and a wrench in to tight the nut; I don't know how they did this from the factory. Options that I'm considering. Say to hell with the nuts and just use self tapping screws and hope they hold; this might work as it was the bottom row of the hinge that was coming loose for me, the top part of the hinge for the most part was fine with the self tapping screws when I did it the first time. Or, try and prop the tent up part way so that I'll have more room inside to work with. I have a build thread on expedition portal here: expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/wildernest-restoration.233113/

So you have the bottom half of the hinge (half that attaches to truck cap) screwed in and tightened, correct? And you’re trying to get the screws through the top half of the hinge (half that attaches to the flipping “bed” section) and tightened down, correct? And you can get the screws in but there’s not enough room to get a wrench in to tighten it down? Am I getting this right?
If so, when I did mine, I had a second person help. Lift the top “bed” section 90* up so it forms and L shape. One person is on the inside and one is on the outside. Communicate which bolt you’re going to work on and while the person on the inside holds the wrench and nut, the person on the outside screws in the bolt. Both holding the roof vertically is not such a hard task as you can insert bolts/nuts beforehand, hand tighten, flip lid vertically and then tighten up once you have proper work space. Does this make sense?
